Today is Earth Day, started for years ago in 1970… I did a presentation for my classes this morning, outlining what is happening to our world, a little history of Earth Day and a worksheet to go along with it. The girls spend a million hours a day in school, but have never heard of Earth Day… they better at least be DAMN good at math.
Anyway, my view, and it might seem a little sad (but it’s my blog), is that we’re fucked. I honestly don’t see the world stopping Global Warming. Take for example, the big men in Washington. No one there gives a shit about Global Warming. They only care about security policies, healthcare and the economy… in other words, the things people are thinking about. I’ve taken university courses on Climate Change and Natural Disasters, and this is real. I’ve done some reading, and some politicans have some bills that would actually help the world. They introduce them… and they get shot down. They have to weaken them a bit, introduce them and have them shot down again. Finally, when the bill is weak and has no life, they can get enough votes to pass it through congress. It just doesn’t have enough to really make a difference.
Note: I ‘m using U.S. Politics, because, well, let’s be real, they have the power. I notice that here in South Korea… anything the U.S. does, that is big news. In the defence of the politicians, they have to get votes to stay in office, and security etc is what gets them there. It also doesn’t help that CNN, FOX and NBC shove the fear of the Taliban and Iranian nuclear attacks down the throats of Americans. What the fuck else are they to think?
So, if anything is going to change in the long run, it needs to start there. Sure, you see a few hybrid vehicles cruising around… but have you been to Thunder Bay? Everyone drives a big truck, burning litres of gasoline. I want the world to change towards a cleaner, brighter future, but I don’t see it happening. Big business has to change the way things are done. I don’t want to say helping out yourself isn’t going to work, but this is one of those moments where the big guns need to fire… pea-shooters won’t do enough.
