It was January of 2008. I was playing football then for UW, and our off season training was getting into full swing. It was a 7am morning workout, and in walked a 6’8 tall, lanky basketball player who wanted to make his move over to football, Joel Reinders. He never played a single play then, and really didn’t know what he was working out for. And, I’ll be honest with you, he had no idea what he was doing in that weight room. So, I decided to take him through a workout and help him out as much as I can. He wasn’t very strong, but that’s expected when you start to work out. He was going to play defensive end, and he needed to put on some weight. But man, did he have a frame.
Well, I guess Joel took to the whole “working out” thing. He got much bigger, and today weighs in at 320 lbs on his 6’8 body. A monster. Moved to the Offensive Tackle. He’s excelled at football now. 2 years ago he had never played a single play.
As of this weekend, Joel is now a member of the Cleveland Browns in the best football league on earth. I wish him the very best. Congratulations Joel, that’s an amazing story.
