There’s a lot of differences between the Republic of Korea and Canada; everyone is Asian here, you don’t drink the tap water, Korean’s can’t pronounce the word jewellery.. and the bars don’t have an official closing time.
The last part is particularly troubling for me, because I like to be in bed early and up early for the most part. But, my friends here in Korea (except Mark, who’s going back to America..), they like to party til 6 in the mornin’. Literally, many people in these parts go home on average 5 am. Which is convenient for them, because the bars will stay open until they stop buying booze.
So, as I’ve been getting very fit lately, I’ve been staying away from booze more and more (except last night…). But, my friends do like to drink. So, I guess it’s just something that is a little irritating, because when I do leave sober at 1am, I get called “soft” and a “party pooper”, etc etc.
On the show How I Met Your Mother, Ted Mosby’s Mom has a quote:
“Nothing good ever happens after 2am. Just go to bed.”
The track record is there: I’ve been arrested, gotten my nose broken, ended up stranded in the mountains in Alberta, been lost in Guelph.. the list goes on after 2am. I’m not saying bad things always happen, they generally don’t. But as I mature (what!?) I like to approach most situations sober and in good conscious.
I’m not saying I won’t stay out til 6 am ever again… some nights are great. And I love my friends, and knowing they like me there means I will stick around sometimes. Just, most times I like to wake up in the morning hangover free ready to get a great Korean day. Drink it in, it always goes down smooth.
