So, lately my British friend Tim (stock photo below) hasn’t shut the hell up about thinking to purchase, purchasing and then having his new Mac. He says how great “it streams HD video” (he means porn), the screen is so bright, battery is amazing, etc. It’s brought up a few debates about Mac’s and PC’s and all that junk. Here’s what I think.
So I’ve now been a Mac user since mid 2006, switching from Mac to Windows when a cleaning lady spilled hot chocolate on my Sony and insurance gave me cash for a new one. Since then, I’ve become pretty savvy on the Mac and understand them pretty well. But, I don’t believe Mac is the clear winner in this little battle. Not even close.
“Mac’s don’t get viruses”
Okay, this one I will endorse. In over 4 years and two Mac’s, not a single one. I’m impressed. Window’s PC’s on the other hand… many viruses, all the time it seems. But why? Are Mac’s unable to get viruses? No, they can get them. The biggest problem is that Window’s computers are about 90% of all computers. If you were making a virus to infect computers, would you make one that has a 1 in 10 chance of working or a 9 in 10 chance.
Mac’s can get viruses, but they aren’t near as likely. That being said, on your PC if you keep your virus software up-to-date and do regular maintenance checks, you’ll be fine.
“Apple makes it all – hardware and software”
Apple produces both the Operating System (OS) and the physical computer, and ensures they will work together. It does that very well. Microsoft only makes the OS, leaving the hardware to other vendors. They cannot ensure that it will work as smoothly as they might like.
But, that also creates problems. All these companies selling PC’s can make many different shapes and styles, while driving their competitors prices way down. That’s the biggest reason PC’s are so much cheaper. If they aren’t cheap, you’ll go to another company that sells the same for cheaper. It makes the PC a much more affordable option.
Now you might say… Everybody is turning to Mac’s. No, just people you know. People in Canada, England, the USA and other very affluent countries. If you live in India (which has over 1 billion people..) would you spend your money on a Mac? No. Cheaper PC. So, the majority of people all over the world are on PC’s, and they won’t change anytime soon.
“Windows has more programs”
They do, without question. But, for the average user it’s not too big a deal. Mac has MS Word, Powerpoint, etc and then a bunch of other programs that most people need. For those though that do highly specialized things, like running a business, it’s Window’s without a question.
Do you like video games? Go with a PC. Mac’s have the horsepower now, but not the operating system. Games are all designed for windows.
“If you’re getting a new one, buy a Mac”
Shut up people who say “get a Mac, they are soooooo much better”. They aren’t. I find it easier for my lifestyle, yes. I made the move and it has worked out. Not everyone feels that way. Half the time it’s just that state of mind, “I’m the cool guy with a Mac”.
Do research and figure out what you need. And shut up about it.
